INDUSTRY FOCUS: Renewable energy in agriculture, specifically dairy farming

Wamala Energy Company, in partnership with UNREEEA, introduces "WE Coolers," a solar-powered Bulk Milk Cooling (BMC) system designed for off-grid dairy farmers. The project aims to revolutionize dairy farming by providing a clean energy solution for milk preservation, reducing environmental impact, and improving economic viability for milk collection centers and farmers.

Problem Statement

The dairy sector faces challenges such as milk spoilage within hours after milking, reliance on diesel generators for milk chilling, significant CO2 emissions, and economic strain due to generator downtimes. Addressing these issues is crucial for sustainable dairy farming, environmental protection, and the financial stability of the dairy industry.

Solution

The project offers a solar-driven BMC solution that requires no upfront costs and operates with no technology or operational risks. The WE Coolers utilize a 7.5kW peak solar PV system to cool milk to optimal temperatures, serving both off-grid dairy cooperatives and grid-connected farmers seeking to reduce utility costs.

Project Stages

The project is in an operational phase, with a focus on expanding the impact and reach of WE Coolers. The timeline includes the installation of additional WE cooler systems, marketing efforts, and ongoing operations and development.

Impact

The WE Coolers are expected to save 4.2 tonnes of carbon emissions annually, reduce air pollution, decrease post-harvest milk losses, and increase revenue for farmers. The project also aims to create employment during construction and provide permanent jobs, as well as contribute to the community through additional services like lighting and charging ports.

Stakeholders

The project involves a team of experts, including a project manager, technical expert, investments expert, and finance expert. Community engagement is a key aspect of the project, as it directly impacts local farmers and milk collection centers.
