The majority of refugees globally, including 85% in Kakuma, lack access to electricity, hindering economic opportunities and impacting social outcomes such as health and education. The current reliance on fossil fuels for lighting exacerbates environmental issues and poses fire risks.

The project proposes installing 100 kW Solar PV panels and integrating smart metering technology to provide sustainable energy. This approach includes community ownership, with local maintenance crews and a steering committee, ensuring social impact and environmental conservation.

The project is in the expansion phase, with plans to upscale the existing 20kW mini-grid to serve more clients. The timeline involves the installation of PV panels and storage, along with the deployment of smart meters and the establishment of community structures.

The project anticipates providing clean energy, reducing carbon emissions, and decreasing fire risks. It also aims to improve health and education outcomes by offering better lighting and supporting local economic development through business growth and job creation.
