Overview
COUNTRY: Kenya
LOCATION: Kakuma refugee camp
INDUSTRY FOCUS: Renewable energy services
Okapi Green Energy Limited, established in 2018, operates in Kakuma refugee camp with a mission to deliver affordable and reliable renewable electricity. The project aims to boost economic activities and enhance living conditions within the camp by expanding its 20kW mini-grid to a 100kW system, serving an additional 1200 households and 300 businesses.

Problem Statement
The majority of refugees globally, including 85% in Kakuma, lack access to electricity, hindering economic opportunities and impacting social outcomes such as health and education. The current reliance on fossil fuels for lighting exacerbates environmental issues and poses fire risks.
Solution
The project proposes installing 100 kW Solar PV panels and integrating smart metering technology to provide sustainable energy. This approach includes community ownership, with local maintenance crews and a steering committee, ensuring social impact and environmental conservation.
Project Stages
The project is in the expansion phase, with plans to upscale the existing 20kW mini-grid to serve more clients. The timeline involves the installation of PV panels and storage, along with the deployment of smart meters and the establishment of community structures.
Impact
The project anticipates providing clean energy, reducing carbon emissions, and decreasing fire risks. It also aims to improve health and education outcomes by offering better lighting and supporting local economic development through business growth and job creation.
Stakeholders
The project involves the refugee community, with a focus on community ownership and local participation. It also seeks support from grants and equity investments, indicating a collaborative approach with potential partners and investors.
