A timely and essential initiative aimed at bridging the skills gap and empowering local youth to seize the opportunities presented by the solar industry

Solar Vocational Training

This program is designed to equip 600 youths with solar installation and maintenance skills. The training will provide them with the technical skills necessary to install 2 of 13 and maintain solar systems.

In addition to the technical training, participants will undergo entrepreneurship coaching and job readiness training. This holistic approach will ensure that they are equipped with the technical solar maintenance and installation skills and entrepreneurial skills, such as business management and marketing, necessary to create and take advantage of employment opportunities in the solar industry.

For the Solar Vocational Training, we aim to reach 600 youths. Of these, 70% (or 350 individuals) will be young women. Furthermore, 30% of the 600

participants (or 150 individuals) will be young men. We aim to create 500 jobs.

Solar STEM Training Program

This program targets 300 form 4 high school youths in the Kakuma refugee camp. The training will expose them to the science and technology behind solar energy.In addition to the STEM training, participants will also attend a life skills workshop. The program will culminate in a science trade fair, allowing the participants to showcase what they have learned and developed during the training and their ability to solve problems in the community.

We target 300 participants. The segmentation is similar to vocational training: 70% (or 210 individuals) will be young women, and the remaining 30% (or 90 individuals) will be young men. Also, 10% of the 300 participants (or 30 individuals) will be youths from host communities, and the remaining 70% (or 210 individuals) are refugees. By challenging gender norms and providing opportunities for women in non-traditional sectors, the program promotes gender equality and social inclusion. We aim to create 100 jobs from the STEM training.

Empowerment through Education: Equipping Women for Solar Industry Success

The Solar Maintenance Training will focus on youths between the ages of 16 and 28, with special consideration given to females up to the age of 35.Upon completion of the training, participants will have the necessary skills to excel in the solar industry. There are several companies working in renewable energy in Kakuma, including the Norwegian Refugee Council, SNV, Sun King, Boxx, Renewvia Energy, and Okapi Green Energy, who would be willing to employ trained technicians. Given the high cost of sourcing technicians from other parts of the country, many organizations who power their centers with solar off grid solutions would absorb the locally trained technicians and provide another source of employment opportunity.

Unlocking Solar Potential: Empowering Refugee Youths in Turkana County

Furthermore, with the new Refugee Act, refugee youths are not limited to employment opportunities in Kakuma alone and could travel to other parts of the country to offer their services as technicians. The solar industry is experiencing rapid growth globally, and Turkana County is no exception. As the cost of solar panels and other renewable energy technologies continue to drop, more businesses and households are turning to solar energy as a viable alternative to traditional power sources. This trend has created a significant demand for skilled solar technicians and installers in Turkana County. Furthermore, the county's remote and arid location presents a unique opportunity for off-grid solar installations, making the region a potential hub for solar energy production and employment. As such, the Solar Maintenance Training program is a timely and essential initiative aimed at bridging the skills gap and empowering local youth to seize the opportunities presented by the solar industry.
