Project
Overview

COUNTRY: Zambia
LOCATION: Rural communities across Zambia and neighboring countries
INDUSTRY FOCUS: Clean energy, Solar power solutions, Women empowerment

WidEnergy Africa Ltd is a women-led company focused on empowering rural communities across Africa through clean, affordable, and sustainable energy solutions. The project specifically targets the deployment of solar-powered freezers and water pumps to improve agricultural productivity and business operations while promoting women's participation in the energy transition through a door-to-door agent model.

Problem Statement

Rural communities in Zambia face significant challenges due to the lack of access to clean irrigation systems and cooling facilities. Current reliance on diesel/petrol pumps for irrigation causes environmental damage through greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and soil contamination. Additionally, these systems incur high maintenance costs and are vulnerable to fuel theft. The absence of reliable cooling systems in off-grid regions severely limits business opportunities and contributes to post-harvest losses, particularly affecting small businesses and agricultural communities.

Solution

The project implements two key productive use of energy (PUE) solutions: solar-powered water pumps and solar freezers. These systems are offered through an innovative pay-as-you-go (PAYGO) model with flexible payment terms, making them accessible to rural communities. The solution includes a comprehensive distribution network and focuses on quality lending portfolios to ensure sustainability. The technology is specifically designed for off-grid applications while being equally suitable for grid-connected users seeking more sustainable options.

Project Stages

The project is currently in its expansion phase, focusing on the deployment of 500 solar freezers and 500 solar water pumps to rural communities and SMEs. The implementation includes establishing a robust distribution network, training door-to-door sales agents, and upgrading technology infrastructure with enhanced CRM systems. The project also plans to expand into eight neighboring countries to increase clean energy access across the region.

Impact

To date, WidEnergy has directly empowered over 90,000 people, with 70% being women, and indirectly benefited more than 600,000 individuals, of whom 61% are women. The project targets to reduce at least 5,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions while creating carbon credit opportunities. The initiative significantly improves agricultural productivity, enhances business opportunities, and contributes to women's economic empowerment through its unique sales agent model.
